Telescopic hydraulic cylinders are the most efficient way to achieve high stroke (travel distance) in limited installation spaces in hydraulic systems. These specially designed cylinders consist of multiple nested stages, providing a much longer extension distance relative to the body length.
What is a Telescopic Cylinder?
A telescopic hydraulic cylinder is a specialized type of hydraulic cylinder that consists of multiple interwoven cylinder tubes (called stages or "stages"). Thanks to this structure, the cylinder has a very short length when closed, but can extend up to several times during operation.
Telescopic cylinders are generally preferred when long stroke (travel distance) is required in tight spaces. For example, in applications such as dump trucks, waste collection vehicles or mobile cranes, the lifting height is high but the installation space is limited — which is why the telescopic structure is the perfect solution.
Working Principle
The telescoping cylinder consists of multiple stages, each of which opens and closes sequentially.
Hydraulic oil enters the cylinder under pressure,
The smallest diameter stage is opened first,
Then the larger stages lengthen in sequence, providing the total stroke. When the cylinder is retracted, the stages close in reverse order.
In this way, the total elongation length of the cylinder can be 3 to 5 times the length of the body.
Structure of Telescopic Cylinders
A telescopic cylinder typically consists of these components:
Body (Cylinder Tube): The outermost, pressure-resistant main part.
Internal Stages: Piston structures, each of which fits into the previous one.
Piston Rods and Seals: Provides sealing and guidance at each stage.
End Connections: Pin, flange, or eye connections can be used for mounting.
Uses
Telehandlers are particularly popular in applications requiring a high lifting distance but limited installation space:
Dump Trucks & Trailers
Mobile Cranes and Platforms
Agricultural Machinery
Waste Collection Vehicles
Construction Equipment (Excavator, Loader, etc.)
In these applications, telescopic cylinders offer the advantage of both compactness and high buoyancy.
Advantages
High Elongation Rate: 3–5 times more stroke than body length. Compact Design: Easy installation in tight spaces. High Strength and Durability: Pressure-resistant construction to handle heavy loads. Controlled Movement: Stable operation thanks to the opening and closing of each stage sequentially.
Things to Consider
In order for telescopic cylinders to work efficiently;
The mounting position must be set correctly,
Pollution and particle ingress should be prevented,
The right oil viscosity should be selected,
Air discharge and system pressure should be checked regularly.
These elements both extend the life of the cylinder and maintain system performance.
Hidroman Solution
Hidroman specially designs and manufactures telescopic hydraulic cylinders with different stroke and pressure values according to customer applications. Both single-acting damper cylinders and double-acting telescopic models are developed to be compatible with mobile and industrial systems.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Telescopic Hydraulic Cylinders
A telescopic cylinder is a type of hydraulic cylinder that consists of multiple piston tubes intertwined with each other and provides a long stroke (travel distance) in a short closed length. It is most commonly used in dump truck, crane and platform systems.
Hydraulic oil enters the cylinder under pressure. The smallest tier is unlocked first, followed by the other tiers extending in turn. When it is retracted, it closes in reverse order. In this way, a long extension distance is obtained in a short body.
Provides long stroke with compact design.
It can handle heavy loads.
It can be used in systems with narrow installation space.
It offers controlled movement thanks to gradual opening.
Single-acting telescopic cylinder: Often used in damper applications, opening with pressure and closing with gravity.
Double-acting telescopic cylinder: Works with pressure in both directions, preferred in applications requiring more precise control.
