How to Select a Hydraulic Hose Crimping Machine Die?
The hydraulic hose pressing process is one of the most critical steps in the system, ensuring joint security and leak-tightness. Without the correct die set, even the highest quality hoses and fittings will fail to deliver the expected performance. Therefore, when selecting a die, ensuring compliance with both the hose and fitting dimensions is crucial.
The Main Purpose of Die Selection
The goal is to ensure that the fitting mounted on the hose is pressed with a uniform clamping force, ensuring it is neither too loose nor too tight.
To achieve this balance, die selection is made taking into account specific dimensions and tolerances.
Data Required for Die Selection
To select the correct die for a hydraulic hose press, the following information must be known:
Hose type: (e.g., SAE 100 R1AT, R2AT, 4SP, 4SH, etc.)
Hose diameter: (e.g., DN10, DN12, DN16, etc.)
Fitting type: (e.g., BSP, JIC, ORFS, DKOL, DKOS, etc.)
Fitting outer diameter (dimension A)
The target diameter after crimping (crimp diameter) is specified in the manufacturer's tables.
How is the Die Diameter Determined?
The die diameter is generally determined based on the crimp diameter specified by the fitting manufacturer.
This value is set on the press machine via the calibration card or digital control panel.
To put it simply:
Die Size = Fitting Outer Diameter - Pressing Allowance
For example:
If the target pressing diameter for a 1SN DN12 hose with a 3/4” BSP fitting is 30.5 mm, the fitting should have a nominal diameter of 30.5 mm.
Consequences of Incorrect Die Selection
Incorrect Situation
Result
If the die is too large:
The fitting will become loose, causing leaks and hose detachment.
If the die is too small:
The hose body will be damaged, the inner layer will be crushed, and cracks will form.
Proper die but incorrect pressing pressure:
The fitting will become oval, and the flow cross-section will be impaired.
Application Example
Example:
Hose: SAE 100 R2AT DN16
Fitting: 1” BSP Male
Manufacturer's target diameter: 35.4 mm
Your press machine's die tables should show 35 If the mm die is closest to this value, the pressing is performed to set it at 35.4 mm.
Post-pressing measurement must be checked with a caliper.
Mold Maintenance and Control
Mold surfaces should be cleaned after every 500–1000 pressings.
Molds with surface wear or outside diameter tolerances should not be used.
Molds should not be left without lubrication; they should be protected with a light coat of grease.
Mold wear should be measured regularly with a micrometer.

CONTROL PANEL
STOP BUTTON (FOR EMERGENCY)
This button is used when the machine is urgently needed for safety or any other reason. Pressing this button stops all machine functions.
START BUTTON
Pressing this button starts the motor and activates the control panel.
STOP BUTTON
Pressing this button turns off both the motor and the control panel.
DATA ENTRY BUTTON
Pressing this button activates the data entry area on the control panel. After entering data, pressing this button again exits data entry mode.
SELECTOR
The entire control panel is controlled by this button and the data entry button. To enter data or adjust the machine, turn this button right or left to the desired location on the screen. Press the Data Entry Button to activate the field or enter data.
SEMI-AUTOMATIC HOSE FITTING PRESSING
Pressing this button completes the hose fitting pressing process and opens the machine to the automatically set opening diameter.
HOSE FITTING PRESSING BUTTON
Pressing this button performs the hose fitting pressing process. The die movement continues as long as the button is pressed. Movement stops when the button is released.
OPEN BUTTON
When this button is pressed, the die opens. The die movement continues as long as the button is pressed. Movement stops when the button is released.
9. HOSE COUPLING PRESSING DIAMETER
The data in this field is activated by pressing the E button and set to the desired value with the Selector button. Press the E button to accept the data. This data determines the die closing diameter. (Hose Coupling Pressing Diameter)
DIE SET
After setting the hose coupling pressing diameter, the control panel automatically displays the required die size in this section. If the specified die is not installed on the machine, the hose coupling pressing size will be incorrect.
